Diesel Electrics wins national award

Dalby auto electrical business Diesel Electrics has won the prestigious Prime Minster's Small Business of the Year Award, announced at the Australian Training Awards in Sydney on Friday night.

Diesel Electrics, a commercial and heavy equipment service centre owned by Anthony and Kellie Wenning, was described as a "small business with a big commitment to training".

"We are very committed to dedicating the time and resources needed to help our employees achieve their own career goals," Mrs Wenning said.

"Not only does this help them as individuals, it helps our business and it makes a contribution to our community and our region's future."

Mrs Wenning said the awards involved a rigorous judging process including site evaluations and a presentation and interview session in front of a panel of experts in Canberra.

Diesel Electrics was commended for spending eight per cent of work time on training. Recruits are welcomed with a comprehensive induction program that emphasises workplace safety and effectiveness.

Mrs Wenning said the judges highlighted Diesel Electrics' positive working relationship with training providers and its success in providing well-rounded learning opportunities.

"We offer a balance of technical training, professional development and leadership development."

Apprentices are provided four hours a week for study in a fully-equipped training room, which has helped them to achieve consistently high results.

Mrs Wenning has been invited by Skills Tasmania to speak at a training conference and is looking forward to the opportunity to encourage other businesses to think innovatively in their approach to training.

"Participating in the Training Awards has been an amazing and rewarding experience that has opened doors for us to grow as a business and to grow as individuals."
